Depression
  • Prolonged sadness or unexplained crying spells
  • Significant changes in appetite or sleep patterns
  • Pessimism or indifference
  • Loss of energy or persistent lethargy
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Inability to enjoy former interests or social withdrawal
  • Unexplained aches and pains
  • Recurring thoughts of death or suicide
Mania
  • Heightened mood, exaggerated optimism and self-confidence
  • Decreased need for sleep without fatigue
  • Excessive irritability or aggressive behavior
  • Increased physical or mental activity
  • Racing speech, flight of ideas and impulsiveness
  • Poor judgment or easily distracted
  • Reckless behavior, such as spending sprees, rash business decisions, erratic driving, or sexual indiscretions
  • In the most severe cases, auditory hallucinations
